**Example Scenario:** We received your HEAP award letter showing a benefit of **$560**, but have **not yet received payment** from HEAP for your pellets. You live **27 miles away** from us. ---
### Step 1: Determine Product and Delivery Costs - **Cash discounted price (if paid directly)**: $429 per ton (50 bags) - **Delivery rate:** $10 per mile × 27 miles = **$270 delivery fee per ton** Because HEAP payments can take **30+ days** to arrive, **you do not qualify for the 10% cash discount.** So your **non-cash adjusted balance** becomes: $560 – 10% = **$504 available balance** for pellets and delivery. ---
### Step 2: Deduct Delivery Fee - **Delivery fee (per ton):** $270 You have the **option to pay this delivery fee in cash** to get **more product for your HEAP funds.** If you choose not to, the delivery fee comes out of your HEAP balance: $504 – $270 = **$234 remaining for pellets** ---
### Step 3: Calculate How Many Bags Are Covered - **Non-discounted pellet price:** $429 ÷ 50 bags = **$8.58 per bag** Now, use your remaining balance to calculate bags covered by HEAP: $234 ÷ $8.58 = **27.3 bags** paid for by HEAP (including delivery) ---
### Step 4: Optional — Pay Delivery in Cash to Get More Pellets If you pay the $270 delivery fee out-of-pocket, you keep your full $504 balance for pellets: $504 ÷ $8.58 = **58.7 bags** — **more than one ton** of pellets! ---
